Cupola

The original Gove school building was located on the West side of Colorado Boulevard between 12th and 14th Ave. It was built in 1910 and opened for students in 1911. Four architectural pieces, Known as cupolas, adorned the roof of the building.

In 1975 a new facility was built on the east side of Colorado Boulevard and the original building was closed. Prior to the demolition of the old school in 1976, the four cupolas were removed. Two of them were placed in a storage yard and were either discarded or sold for salvage. In 1976, the third cupola was placed in the interior courtyard of the new Gove Middle School. The fourth cupola was placed in the Gove Gardens on the west side of Colorado Boulevard. That cupola was either discarded or sold for salvage in 2011.

In January of 2012, demolition of the newer site for Gove began. Former students and staff members were able to secure the cupola, even though it was in a deteriorating state. The Gove Historical Society was formed and the cupola was restored.

It is the intent of the Gove Historical Society to find an appropriate location for the 102-year old cupola, so that it can serve as a visible reminder of Aaron Gove’s Legacy as well as the history of both Gove school buildings.
